Parking in Port Louis and Grand Baie: A Local’s Guide to Avoiding Fines
You have picked up your rental car with Solisla, you have mastered driving on the left side of the road, and now you are heading into the city for some shopping.
Then, you see it: a chaotic mix of yellow lines, busy streets, and locals scratching paper tickets on their dashboards.
Parking in Mauritius—especially in the capital, Port Louis, and the tourist hub, Grand Baie—can be tricky if you don’t know the rules. One wrong move on a double yellow line can lead to a fine (or a wheel clamp) that puts a damper on your holiday.
Here is your cheat sheet to parking safely, legally, and stress-free.
1. The “Parking Coupon” System Explained
In many parts of the world, you pay for street parking via an app or a solar-powered meter. In Mauritius, we keep it “old school.”
If you park on the street in a town center (Port Louis, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, or Curepipe), you likely need a parking coupon.
- Where to buy them: You can buy booklets of coupons at most Gas Stations (Engen, Shell, Total) or local corner shops.
- How to use them: The coupon needs to be perforated.
- Display: Place it clearly on your dashboard.
- Zones: Look at the sign on the sidewalk.
2. Port Louis: The “Stress-Free” Strategy
Port Louis is hectic. Motorbikes weave through traffic, and street parking spots are rare gold dust.
Our Recommendation: Do Not Park on the Street. Trying to parallel park a rental car in tight traffic while hunting for a coupon vendor is stressful. Instead, use the Caudan Waterfront Parking.
- Why: It is secure, covered (keeps your car cool), and perfectly located.
- Cost: Affordable (Rs. 80 for the first 4 hours).
- Convenience: You walk straight out of the parking lot into the mall, umbrella alley, and the craft market.
Alternative: The Victoria Urban Terminal offering a modern Park & Ride facility.
3. Grand Baie: Malls are Your Best Friend
Grand Baie is the tourist capital, but the coastal road (Royal Road) is very narrow.
The Golden Rule: Use the Shopping Mall Parking.
- Grand Baie La Croisette: Massive, covered underground parking. It is free, secure, and only a 5-minute walk or short taxi ride to the beach area.
- Super U: Another huge, free open-air parking lot. It is right in the center of town.
Avoid: Parking on the sunset side of the coastal road near “Sunset Boulevard” unless there is a clearly marked bay. Traffic police are very active here.
4. Decoding the Yellow Lines
- Double Yellow Lines: STOP! strictly no parking or waiting at any time. You will get a ticket, and in some areas, you might get clamped.
- Single Yellow Line: No parking, only waiting. Restricted parking. You cannot park there. You can only stop for a few seconds, but do not park here and go.
- White Box: Usually a paid parking bay (requires a coupon).
5. What if I get a fine?
If you return to your car and find a ticket under the wiper, don’t panic.
- Do not ignore it. The fine is linked to the vehicle’s registration.
- Notify us. You can pay the fine asap or within the time frame mentioned on the ticket (Usually at a district court cash office or post office) or we can handle the payment on your behalf when you return the car to us (always within time frame).
Summary: Plan Your Parking
The best way to enjoy Port Louis and Grand Baie is to park in the secure mall lots and explore on foot. It is safer for the rental vehicle (no scratches!) and stress-free for you.
Tip: If you are nervous about fitting into tight spaces, remember our advice from our Small Car vs. SUV guide—a compact car is much easier to park in the city!
