Rental insurance in mauritius explained

Understanding Rental Insurance: What Full Coverage Really Means for Your Trip

You are at the checkout page. You have picked your car. Now you are staring at the insurance options, and terms like “Excess,” “CDW,” and “Deposit” are swimming on the screen.

It is the most confusing part of renting a vehicle, but also the most important.

At Solisla, we believe in total transparency. We don’t want you to worry about hidden risks while you are driving to Le Morne. Here is a simple, jargon-free guide to how car rental insurance works in Mauritius and what happens with your deposit.

The Basics: What is “Collision Damage Waiver” (CDW)?

In Mauritius, all rental cars come with Collision Damage Waiver (CDW).

  • What it is: It limits your financial liability if the rental car is damaged.
  • What it is NOT: It is not a “Get out of Jail Free” card. It does not mean you pay zero if you crash. Instead, it means you are only responsible for a maximum amount, known as the Excess (or Deductible).

The “Excess” Deposit: How It Works at Solisla

This is the part that confuses most travelers.

When we deliver the car to you—whether at the airport or your hotel—we will place a hold or charge a Refundable Security Deposit on your credit card.

  • Why do we do this? This amount represents the insurance excess. It is the maximum amount our insurance company would charge us if there is a claim (e.g., a scratch, a dent, or an accident).
  • If you return the car safely: You get 100% of this money back.
  • If there is damage: The repair cost is deducted from this deposit, and the rest is refunded. You will never pay more than this deposit amount for covered damages.

Why is there a delay in the refund?

You might wonder: “I returned the car on Monday, why didn’t I get my deposit back on Tuesday?” At Solisla, we process the refund to the same card you used. However, there is a standard buffer period (usually a few days) before the funds are released.

The Reason: Speeding Tickets. In Mauritius, speed cameras are automated. If you flashed a camera on your way to the airport, the fine notification doesn’t arrive instantly. We need this small buffer window to ensure there are no outstanding traffic fines linked to your rental period.

Drive with Confidence

Insurance isn’t there to scare you; it is there to protect you. By understanding that your Deposit = Your Maximum Liability, you can relax.

As long as you drive responsibly and don’t treat the speed limits as suggestions, your deposit will find its way back to your bank account shortly after your trip.
